trouble pairing

Hello, I am having the hardest time pairing my apple watch to my new iPhone. I can’t pair automatically because it won’t pick up my watch when I hold it up, and when I try to pair manually it won’t show me a 6 digit code to type into phone. Please help me figure it out.
