iTunes silently refuses to import .AAC files

iTunes purportedly imports AAC files (according to Apple support https://support.apple.com/guide/itunes/convert-music-file-formats-itns2972/mac) . Yet when importing some AAC files, it silently rejects the file. Bug 1: the import doesn't work as documented, Bug 2: it does not put the file into the "Not imported" folder as documented. Bug 3: It does not notify the user of the failure.


The first attempt was files converted into AAC (from .WAV, a non-supported lossless format) using "High Quality" (256 kbs/44k Hz sampling rate). The second attempt used the "Normal Quality" (128 kbps/41k Hz). Both attempts failed as described.


PS: The point for me in doing this is to consolidate my library into AAC files wherever possible so that multiple players (ie, non Apple) can play them.

What is the source of these AAC files? If you use iTunes to convert a track both the original and converted file will be in the library so won't need importing. iTunes typically fails silently when it rejects an attempted import. (It's not a bug, it's a feature.) If you want confirmation that iTunes doesn't like a particular file place a copy inside the Automatically Add to iTunes folder inside the iTunes Media folder. Rejected files should be moved into a Not Added folder.


iTunes supports .wav imports. These will show up as unknown artist, unknown album, with the filename used as the track name.
