I have a iMac late 2009, I can not upgrade to Mojave. Do I have to purchase another computer or will I be safe using High Sierra?
You are safe using High Sierra. It will be supported with updates for another couple of yers. Even after that you can still use it as long as it lasts, although you will no longer be issued security updates.

If you want to run Mac OS beyond HS yes, you will need a newer Mac. Mojave and beyond depend on the GPU's having Metal. This did not become available in iMacs until the 2012 models. Sorry there is no work around. Considering the age of the computer, you may want to think about upgrading it.
