I would like to add subtitles to a video in iMovie. At most times, it works okay, but at other times the subtitles are a bit difficult to read. Is it possible to add a frame to the text, so that for example the letters appear white but with a black outline?

Did you read carefully my response? The effect you want is accomplished by applying outlined formatting (represented by the "O" symbol in the formatting options toolbar revealed after clicking on the big "T"). To make formatting options accessible you must highlight a subtitle track you added to the timeline.
On the timeline, select the subtitles track, click on "T" above the Viewer screen. Additional options will be revealed including the colour, the font (Bold (B), Italic (I), Outlined (O)).
Bold is not the same as framed/bordered. Thank you for your response, but I was looking for something like this:
Yellow text with black frame/border.
