accidentally erased my start up disc on my old Mac. trying to recover

I accidentally erased my start up disc on my old Mac. Its restarting with internet recovery but after 25 mins of the world map spinning it just comes back to the apple logo..... Will I be able to fix this and can I still use my Mac or is it finished?

was hoping to use this older Mac for my kids.

thanks

Steve

If the iMac is from before late 2011 Internet Recovery will not work. however if you make a total mess then you can boot into the Recovery Partition (Command + R) and install Mac OS from there. Please review https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201314
