AirPods lost in case

Lost my AirPods inside of the case at friends place. Can I use the find my AirPods ‘play sound’ feature with them still in the case? And if not, can I wait for the case to die so I can then find the pods?

If they're in their case, you may see their last known location as a gray dot.
