I got an email that my Apple account has been locked. I did not know I had an Apple account. The Apple form to unlock my account asks for my personal information including social security number. Why do I need to provide that information?

You don't; it's fake. Forward the email to reportphishing@apple.com as an attachment and then delete it.

If an Apple ID actually gets locked, its owner will be told when they try logging into it instead of through email. In addition, Apple will only ask customers for their SSN if they're verifying their identity for Apple Pay Cash.
