I'm trying to export unmodified original quality photos to a Google Drive folder or at the very least an external HD but keep getting the prompt that I can't save the files because the volume Macintosh HD is read only. How do I export my photos?
Keith's method should work, but it is not normal, that you cannot export originals. Which version of MacOS X are you using? In macOS 10.14 Mojave you may need to give Photos the permission to access your disk. I had less trouble with Photos after allowed it Full Disk Access in "System Preferences > Security&Privacy", like this:

Try to export to the desktop first and then drag them to the other location.
Hi Keith- I tried that and although I could drag and drop directly into Google Drive, it automatically reduced the size and quality of the photos.
Hi Leonie- this is helpful...let me try to provide photos full disk access and see if the drag and drop in original size will work. Thanks to you and Keith both! :)
Oh- I also downloaded Google backup and sync and have my data saving right now to a Time Machine-designated external HD so I will find out if the photos are being saved in their original size.
Dragging and dropping will reduce the size, since it just transfers the preview. To have full control, use File->export.
