Exporting photos

I'm trying to export unmodified original quality photos to a Google Drive folder or at the very least an external HD but keep getting the prompt that I can't save the files because the volume Macintosh HD is read only. How do I export my photos?

Keith's method should work, but it is not normal, that you cannot export originals. Which version of MacOS X are you using? In macOS 10.14 Mojave you may need to give Photos the permission to access your disk. I had less trouble with Photos after allowed it Full Disk Access in "System Preferences > Security&Privacy", like this:
