Ipad Air 2 keeps switching off when on charge and has the 'charge battery' screen

My iPad continuously turns off and goes straight to the black screen with the empty battery.

More often then not it won't turn back on even when on charge and will only turn back on if I hold down the sleep/wake button a few times. Even then, it won't turn on a lot of the time.

If it is working, as soon as I take it off charge, it shuts down within a couple of minutes even if it is at full battery capacity.

Not sure if it is a problem with the battery of some other hardware.
