iMac is randomly shutting down while I am working. Pressing the power switch does not work.

I can start the computer by unplugging the power cord and then plugging it in again. This happens about once every 30 minutes and seems to get more frequent. It appears to be a hardware issue.

What should I do to further troubleshoot, and what are the next steps. No longer under Apple warranty.

If you have any Panic reports

Please post a few of the most recent Panic reports.

Look for the Kernel Panic reports at:

Finder -> Go -> Go to Folder -> /Library/Logs/DiagnosticReports

<http://support.apple.com/kb/ht2546>

<http://support.apple.com/en-us/HT200553>

The panic report should have ".panic" in the file name.

That's an indication of a bad power supply.  Had the same problem occur with a late 2014  27" iMac. Had to unplug the power cord before it would reboot.  It was under warranty but took 3 trips to the Genius Bar and several sessions with Apple engineers via phone before it got fixed.

They wanted to make sure the problem wasn't software related and finally had me erase the drive and reinstall the system without migrating any of my data over from Time Machine.  When it kept crashing with a new, pristine system they went ahead and replaced the power supply.

Make sure you hav a current backup (a clone to an external HD is very good for this type of restore) and make an appointment at the nearest Apple Authorized Service Provider (AASP).  Have them test it and, if necessary, erase the HD and install a new, pristine system.  Might save you a couple of trips.

Depending on the age of your Mac Apple may consider it Vintage and won't work on it unless you're in California or Turkey - Vintage and obsolete products - Apple Support.

If it is in warranty you can save some time by erasing the drive (clone or backup the drive first) and run it without any of your files installed to verify that it's not 3rd party software that's causing the problem. If you clone the drive before hand it will be easy to boot  from the cloned external drive and clone it back to the iMac's internal drive or migrate from your Time Machine backup.

Take it in to the repair facility Apple Genius Bar or Apple Authorized Service Provider with a pristine system so they can quickly rule out 3rd party software and realize it is hardware related. Might save you some time.

Thank you all for your comments. I have run the diagnostics suggested by Tesserac. , and followed steps 2,3,5 as well as 8. Step 5 (apple hardware test) found no trouble (it took 3 min and 12 sec. I then ran the EtreCheck test, the report of which I cannot attach (no text box visible), so I will describe the results. A major issue that slows down performance is that there are 2 antivirals installed (Malware and Symantic). The latter inadvertently installed itself yesterday, but I cannot find it in my application folder nor does it show up with the looking glass search. How can I uninstall it.? A number of minor issues were also found but are less important now.

Overheating, as suggested by Aqua is a likely cause. The computer was moved 2 weeks ago and there is a bit less room behind it (front is about 1 foot from wall). I have tried to vacuum the vent holes (hard to do), and I noticed that the heat here seemed excessive. I am now using a small Howard fan to cool the back of the computer. Furthermore, as soon as I have completed a task, I put the computer in sleep mode, and the temperature is less high. I have downloaded the macsfan control zip file suggested by Aqua but as I am not that technically savvy am a bit scared to run it. What could happen if I run it?

The symptoms are also similar to Old Toads suggestion of a bad power supply.

What do you suggest should be the next steps? The iMac is no longer under warranty.

I will try to send the EtreCheck report separately, as I cannot find a textbox to put it into.

Norton or Symantec was not in the

application window, so perhaps it did not install itself.

Did you unzip MFC & install it?

I do not recall seeing this. What does MFC stand for?

I have downloaded macOSUpdCombo10.13.6, but not yet installed it. Will clean-up my googlemail and computer and verify backups are working before I do this.

 I am currently not using my DOS partition, as Apple no longer supports this..

My iMac has been running for about 2 hours and is no longer running hot; perhaps the hardware resets and cleanup steps that were performed have rectified the problems. Is it important that some of the remaining plists should be found?

At this stage, will Apple give me a credit if I purchase a new iMac, or do you think it is good to go for a while (1-2 years)?
