Lost or stolen iPhone 6s
When I acquire a new phone ( iPhone 6s) how do I lock the old one if it was stolen???

If you had Find My iPhone turned on , Using your Apple ID & Password you can log onto the iCloud website and put the device into lost mode. There for that would prevent anyone from using it. If This is what you meant by locking it. This would work.
