Importing Photos into Pages

How can I insert photos into an Apple Pages template from the file system without only being able to import from the Photos app?

I understand that I can go to the Menu: Insert>Choose. However, this does not import in into the presized image templates. It just brings the photo into the document at a full size and then it needs to be cropped any every thing. As you can see in the screenshot, If I click on one of the image presets inside the template, there is no option to choose from the file system. It only gives the option to "replace photo" from the photos app, which I do not use on my Mac due to not wanting every photo from my icloud account to take up space on my computer.

I simply wish to import a few photos from my desktop in order to use this template.

You can drag and drop an image from the Finder onto a Pages v8.1 Media Placeholder image and it will automatically adapt the new image to it.
