can u use a imac 2008 as an external screen and having youre mac and imac to have seperate working screens?

No not with a cabled connection, because a 2008 iMac does not support Target Display Mode.

You could try a virtual network viewer like VNCViewer, RealVNC or ScreenRecycler, but the refresh rates are way to sluggish for games or videos.
