Safari 13.0.1 update broke my iMac running High Sierra

After installing Safari 13.0.1 update, my iMac running High Sierra is having many issues. Apple Mail can't send or receive email, Safari won't download any webpages, my Safari Favorites have slowly disappeared, and connection to the App Store no longer works. Firefox works fine without any issues. The issue happens across multiple user accounts on this iMac.


Note: This iMac was working fine until Safari 13.0.1 update was installed on Sept. 24, 2019. This is a 27" iMac from 2011 that is running High Sierra. Apple won't let me install any of the newer versions of OSX. I am NOT running any virus scanners or other 3rd party security applications.

I found a fix for my issue and wanted to report the fix in case anyone else has the same or similar problems.


System Preferences->Network->Advanced->Proxies and uncheck any proxies that are selected.


For some unknown reason, SOCKS Proxy was checked. I unchecked it, clicked Apply, restarted Mail, and everything now works correctly. I have had this iMac for nine years and never had a problem until the Apple Safari 13.0.1 update that was automatically applied on Sept 24, 2019. I don't know what SOCKS Proxy is and I never checked it.


I found this solution on this Apple Community site. Thank you Steve Bilzi1.

Thank you for using Apple Support Communities. It's my understanding that since updating Safari on your iMac, you've been unable to send and receive email, download webpages in Safari, locate missing Favorites, and access the App Store. I can definitely see how this could be concerning. I'm happy to help.


If you haven't already, test the issues while connected to a different network. If the issue persists, test while in safe mode. Starting in safe mode allows your Mac to run certain checks, remove caches, and prevent login items from automatically launching. This can isolate possible third party issues. Thank you for the reply. I restarted my iMac in safe mode and while in safe mode Apple Mail works correctly, browsing the internet with Safari works correctly, and the App Store works. In safe mode I can send and receive email. But when I reboot back into regular mode, Apple Mail does NOT work correctly. It says Connections to server "p72-imap.mail.me.com" on the default ports timed out. So something in that software update broke Mail.
