Email app keeps opening to last read email

Anyone else having issues with the email app and iOS 13? I use the email app (with gmail as the only account) and at least every other time I open the app (after having previously closed it), it opens to the last read email instead of the inbox. It’s super annoying. I’ve reached out to Apple about it but they don’t know what’s going on or how to fix it. I’ve gotten to the point where I’m only marking the emails as read instead of opening them and reading them. Or deleting the email, going to trash, and moving the email back to the inbox to trick the app into not opening that email. Any ideas or help would be appreciated. It’s an iPhone 8. Thanks!
