How do I change the MacAir info with Apple to my details, as the MacAir was bought by someone else as a gift to me, now I cannot update anything in the App Store under my name

I am new to using an Apple product; the MacAir was bought by someone online, who gave it to me for a gift. (it was delivered to my address under my name).

I have registered in the App Store with my information, and now I cannot update anything in the App Store; I am getting this message "UPDATE UNAVAILABLE WITH THIS APPLE ID This update is not available for this Apple ID either because it was bought by a different user or the item was refunded or cancelled".

Please advise how I can sort this out, do I need a letter from the person who bought it for me, can this be sorted out online, etc.

Thanks very much

If the applications that need updating are Apple applications that came with the computer, try going to the App Store Purchases tab or click on your profile and then go to Purchases to see if there is an option to accept the applications with your Apple ID. If that doesn't work, you can delete the applications and download them with your Apple ID. The applications are free. You may have to sign out of the App Store, restart the computer, and sign back in to download new copies.
