Can't login to iMac that's been factory reset

My wife acquired an iMac that was donated to a non-profit. We understand that before it was donated the owner "wiped it clean"--i.e., I think, it was factory reset. When we turn it on we are prompted for an administrator account password. We don't know it and can't login. So we're stuck. Any suggestions?
