Drop your custom fonts in your /Users/$USERNAME/Library/Fonts folder. This is one of the three default System font search areas, and they will also appear in Font Book. These fonts should then be available to your applications. It even works for Type 1 Postscript fonts.

The next time you want to drop fonts in your user's Font folder, click on the Desktop to get Finder focus, and then press shift+command+G (Go To Folder). In that dialog, copy/paste the following, then click Go. A new Finder window will open on your local Fonts folder:

~/Library/Fonts

You place your custom fonts in that folder, and close that Finder window.
