Can I use my iMac as an extended monitor for my MacBook Pro?

I have a new MacBook Pro, how can I use my old iMac as a second monitor? What type of cable do I need?

MacBook Pro 15”, macOS 10.15

Note: Target Display Mode isn’t supported on iMac models with Retina display. Only iMac (27-inch, Late 2009), iMac (27-inch, Mid 2010), and iMac (Mid 2011 to Mid 2014) support Target Display Mode.

iMacs have been in production for over 20 years in hundreds of configurations. Please at least let us know the year and screen size.
