the latest version of Airport Utility for my AirPort Extreme base Station (Model 1084) needs to be updated from 32 bit to 64 bit, I think. When I try to open the firmware update I get a message that the latest version of AirPort Utility doesn't support my base station.

A1084 is not supported by Apple since ages ago.
And has not had a firmware update in ages. What firmware is it on now.. because if you updated anytime in the last 5 years.. it is up to date.. and still unsupported.
What version OS do you run?
It was possible to load 5.6.1 firmware on firmware up to High Sierra at least.. but probably never will be able to on Catalina.
You can use a windows computer and the windows version which apple never updated since win7.

Model 1084 is not an AirPort Extreme......it is an AirPort Express model which was discontinued by Apple over 11 years ago. Apple has classified the 1084 model as Obsolete for over 7 years, so no support has been offered for this product in a long time.
If you have a PC, or a friend with a PC, you might be able to access the settings on the AirPort Express, but the PC software was designed to work on Windows 7.

Frankly, it is nothing short of a miracle that a 1084 model will even power up at all. Most of these devices died after 4-5 years of use.
