You need to check if Word is a 32 or 64 bit application. I don't know how to check 32/64 bits app on your specific macOS exactly but try Check About This Mac -> System Report, select Software/Applications and then Word to see if it tells you. If it's a 32 bit app then don't upgrade to Catalina until you know the upgrade path for Word.
I just upgraded my MBA 11" to 10.15.2 (macOS Catalina) an tried Word for Mac, Version 15.34:
It seems to work from what I could see so far...
