I’ve just subscribed for a year for free with Apple TV.
What exactly do I get that I won’t be charged for...?
Do I still have to pay to rent or buy a movie or a certain box set?
It’s not very clear as to what the free subscription involves or doesn’t!

What you subscribed to is "Apple TV+" (note the +) this is a subscription to Apple produced shows, The Morning Show, For All Mankind, etc. This shows are identified with the "Apple TV+" icon.
The Apple TV "app" gives you access to Apple TV+ shows as well as other non-Apple TV+ shows that are available for rent or purchase.
