Restore Mac from a disk image backup. Disk Image is Extended journal and computer is APFS. How would I go about doing this?

Restore Mac from a disk image backup. Disk Image is Extended journal and computer is APFS. How would I go about doing this? I need to convert the disk image of my HD from extended journal to APFS in order to mount it. I have my disk image copy on an external hard drive. This resulted from a software failure that caused my computer to not be able to start up so I had to go into recovery mode and copy the HD disk image to an external hard drive to save my files since my back up drive failed as well. I accidentally created the copy as a extended journal instead of APFS. I am currently on Catalina.

MacBook Pro 13", macOS 10.15

It wasn't back up via time machine. It was done as a copy of the HD in Recovery mode to a attached external hard drive.

Use DiskUtility Restore feature https://support.apple.com/guide/disk-utility/restore-a-disk-dskutl14062/mac

You don't have to over think it.

I tried this and it failed because it is extended journal and my computer is APFS.

Thanks, Interesting short coming in using the old Restore disk image.

Is this your only backup—3-2-1 Backup Strategy: three copies of your data, two different methods, and one offsite.

Depending on your issue(?) you can boot to Recovery and reinstall the macOS, leaving your data files untouched.

If you are trying to revert to an older macOS (HFS+) you can reformat the internal HD/SSD using the DiskUtility from Recovery.

caveats might be if the machine is brand new and shipped with Catalina. There are some instances where you can still fall back to Mojave.

You do not really paint the big picture—just crumbs of whole issue.

Unfortunately it is as my external hard drive with my time machine back ups failed. Ill try and see if any of these suggestions work. Thanks.

I consider TM a finicky mistress—Time Machine is great when it works, not so much when it doesn't.

These ASC are littered with similar experiences when TM goes side ways for varying reasons.
