Editing home DVDs

I have some home created DVDs and want to upload some scenes from these to my mac, I guess on player? Any idea how to do that?

iMac 27" 5K, macOS 10.12

You'll need to rip the DVD with an app like the free, open source Handbrake and convert to a movie format that you can use in other apps.
