AppleCare cannot be renewed. It extends your standard one-year warranty for two more years after the standard warranty expires. After AppleCare expires, there is no extra warranty provided from Apple.
Check here, AppleCare Products - Apple You are supposed to be able to update it now, under certain conditions.

Thanks kb, that was the link I was looking for. I thought that i had saved it and couldn't find it. It wouldn't appear in a Google search either.
I think I started with your link and then just started tapping links until I got there. I had recalled somewhere that it could be continued past the initial 24 months if it wasn’t canceled.
Yes, I remember reading a story about it, then seeing the link from Apple and saving it. Must have been on another computer when I did it.
