Messages on iPhone 6s

On my iPhone6s, when I tap on Messenger icon and Chats comes up, there's a bubble with a red 1 in a circle. What is that and how do I get rid of it?

Hi Nancy Blazis,

Thanks for reaching out here in the Apple Support Communities. I understand that you want to learn what the red 1 in a circle is in Facebook Messenger.

I'm glad to help with this.

Many iOS apps offer the ability to send notifications. You can manage notification settings to show badges when something wants your attention. What you see here may be a notification letting you know you have an unread message.

Use notifications on your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch

If that doesn't seem to be the case, I suggest reaching out to Facebook Messenger support to see what this is.

Take Care.
