ipod doesn't appear in finder sidebar (Mojave)

I'm connecting an old ipod to my MacBook Pro (OS Mojave) in order to retrieve music files. The iPod shows up in my iTunes sidebar, but it doesn't appear as a desktop icon, nor does it appear in the Finder sidebar. I have "show ipod" checked in Finder preferences.

I performed the same operation with a different ipod (nano), and I didn't have the same problem.

Can anyone tell me how to get this device to show up in Finder, so I can treat it as an external drive?

Thanks in advance!
