Can I update old iPad Mini?

I have an older iPad Mini that hasn’t been used and is currently on software version 7.1. There is a notification like I have a software update but when I click on it, it just says: “Try Again” and goes nowhere.

Is there any hope of updating it to the current software?

An original iPad mini can be updated to iOS 9.3.5 (WiFi Only models) or 9.3.6 (WiFi & Cellular models).

An iPad min2 (a.k.a. iPad mini Retina) and iPad mini3 can be updated to iOS 12.4.6.

Given that your device is so far behind, it may be necessary to connect your iPad to a PC (with iTunes installed) or a Mac (with Finder) to complete the update.
