miniDV media import through imovie hangs in processing

I'm trying to import some old mini DV tapes from a Sony DCR-PC4E camcorder into a mini Mac (late 2012) with an i-link cable to Firewire 800. The media import window looks just fine and I can control the camera and run an import. However stopping the import hangs indefinitely "processing...".

I tried Final Cut X but it uses the same import. Also no joy with Movavi or Camtasia. How might it be possible to import from mini DV? Thanks

Hello!

Did you try to import in Automatic or Manual mode?

If your tape contain many short clips and you try to import your tape in Automatic mode iMovie will generate many events. Each event consists not only by the source .dv file, but also by many thumbnail files and other special files. To generate all this files may take a lot of time.

Have you been waiting for quite a while? Are you sure that your "processing..." is infinite?

Thanks for that.

Quicktime looked promising it previewed the video but failed instantly on record complaining about lack of space with the same message as here https://apple.stackexchange.com/questions/359549/cant-record-screen-with-quicktime-or-cmd-shft-f5-or-any-other-software-on-mac I don't believe it is a space problem for me either.

Image capture is finding (0) devices, if that is where to find the camcorder.
