iOS 13 pull down to check new mail doesn't work

I am setting up my new iPhone SE (2020 version). In Mail I used to be able to pull down from the top of the screen to refresh / check for new mail. This no longer works. I pull down and nothing happens. The text at the bottom of the screen still says 'Updated 5 minutes ago'.

The only way I can get it to update is to quit Mail and restart Mail.

In Settings I've set up my Mail accounts to manully get new emails (presumably only when I have Mail open and manually pull down from the top to check for new mail).

Thank you

iPhone

Whoops. I was trying to drag down from the top of the screen like on my iPhone 5. It turns out this no longer works. You now have to drag down from anywhere on the screen, apart from the top!
