External Display and Audio from MacBook Air

I wish to use an external monitor with my MacBook in close-display mode.

Before I buy a monitor with built in speakers or a speaker set separately, can I use the external display to watch video or listen to music with the sound coming from the laptop even with the lid closed?

Should you already have external speakers, they may be useful

just in case the display has need for 'additional' audio adapters.

Extra adapters may or not work as desired, after purchase of display.

(The internal MacBook/Air speakers should continue to function.)
