Column size in macOS finder

Ever since the update to High Sierra, the column view size is screwed up. Every time I open a new window it defaults the column to the size of the finder window. I am forced to to change it EVERY time! Ugh. This should not default to the size of a window. What a waste of a time!

Example... every time I open dropbox, I get a new window. The columns are the size of the window. If I download a folder the columns are wider than the window!

This is a stupid bug that really needs to be fixed!

I can find nothing that allows me to change this globally. Not a newbie... first mac was a Mac IIcx.

Example: just opened Dropbox. Attached is what I get EVERY time.

I can't be the only that has an issue with the column size.
