iPod classic 3g not showing up in iTunes over firewire

I have an iPod classic 3g that I have tried to connect over FireWire to my Mac, when connected with usb, the iPod shows up in iTunes but It says corrupted, need restore, but when I click restore it says connect with FireWire, so I connect it to FireWire (with an adapter that I have tested and does work) but it never shows up in iTunes or the desktop or disk utility? What can I do?

Edit: I got it working!!! It’s this simple:

Install windows XP onto old pc

Get my MacBook

Format usb drive to fat

Put iPod updater software on it

Plug into windows xp pc

Move installer onto desktop

Open installer

Plug iPod in with USB??? Even though it said FireWire!??

Restore iPod

Plug iPod into power brick

Put it out of disk mode

It will restore and update

This took so long to get working but thank you for your replies!
