Download issues

trying to download an update, Catalina from Mojave, and it keeps stopping after a few mb, am connected via ethernet and line speed is reasonable (about 10mb/s)

iMac with Retina 5K display, macOS 10.14

Go into your Applications folder and look for a file named Install macOS Catalina.app. If there is one delete it. Then boot into Safe Mode (How to use safe mode on your Mac - Apple Support) by booting with the Shift key held down and try downloading and installing from there.

NOTE: Safe Mode boot can take up to 10 minutes as it's doing some system cache cleaning, volume verifying and directory repairing.
