Invalid old Apple ID blocks my iPAD iCloud

I went through the Apple support routine, but they were not able to help me: old iPAD, model A1430, iOS 9.3.6, was linked to Apple ID that was an email address that disappeared. I cannot upgrade the device or do anything, the Apple ID is no longer valid. Not even a complete reset, which also asks for the password of the old Apple ID. All I want is to change that ID to my current ID which I use on all my other devices. Any bright ideas?

If you can't recover the needed password or answer the related security questions satisfactorily using standard procedures, then we can do nothing to help you, except to mention that Apple support might help you if you have an extenuating circumstance (e.g., you have the receipt for your purchase of the device with its serial number on it). If you want to contact Apple support to discuss any possible extenuating circumstance, see these support options:

Thanks, but I already went through all of that, had a long chat with Apple Support. No result, there seems to be no way to erase an old not valid ID from a devise, rendering it useless. It is not a password issue, but a non valid ID issue.

I hoped for an advise, like a forced full res-et of the devise that does not involve the use of the invalid ID. OR anything else.

Thanks
