I received an email saying my Apple ID is locked and if I didn’t unlock it within 24 hours it would be disabled - not sure if this is a phishing mail or genuine ?

It is phishing. If it was locked you would be notified when attempting to log in, including when logging into this forum.

Did you provide any potentially damaging information to anyone? If yes, you'll need to follow up, for example, with a credit card company, Apple, Social Security, your bank, etc.
