Virus notice

During online research/downloading to support TurboTax questions I received a notice stating I have a virus on the MacBook Pro in use with directions to call a number and to not make any attempts to remove the virus. My guess is this is a scam but I don’t know for sure. How can I tell if a hacker changed anything on the computer and determine if there is a virus on the device?

Any pop-ups in a browser like Safari or Chrome that say you have a virus are scam attempts. Close the window and do not contact the scammers.
