iMovie fail

I made a trailer in iMovie and it let me choose 15 or 20 video clips from my iPhone but they don’t appear in the playback. Only the template images and music... How can I get them to appear in the final edit?

Do a File/Convert Trailer to Movie. That will convert your trailer into an iMovie project, where you can do further edits. The iMovie Trailer project will be closed, so further edits will need to be done in the iMovie project.
