Use the option to sync only selected playlists, artists, albums and genres.

  • Connect the phone to iTunes and click on the device icon that appears at the top of the iTunes window:

  • that shows the Device/Settings/Summary pane
  • switch to the Device/Settings/Music (1.) pane:

  • presumably, the Sync Music option (2.) is already selected
  • choose Selected playlists, artists, albums and genres (3.). This will then display the sections in 4.
  • tick the boxes next to the Playlists (4.) that you want on your phone
  • if you change the selections* in any of the panels in section 4, you need to to click the Apply (or possibly Sync) button in the lower right corner of the iTunes window (not shown in screenshot)

* you only need to click the Apply button if you change the selections in 4. You do not need to click the Apply button if you change the content to of the selections.
