My iMac has been struggling to open for a few weeks. Often it will freeze 2/3 into the apple logo screen. It took a few goes to get it on. This last week, I’ve found it will only open if I choose to do it in safe mode. I’ve tried to reinstall the OS, but it freezes mid way. I’ve used first Aid on each of the hard drives and it comes back fine. Any ideas what I could do next?

Boot into the Recovery volume (boot with the Command + R keys held down), select Disk Utility and repair the drive. Reboot normally and see if that helped.
If it didn't help, boot again into Recovery volume and reinstall the system.
Thanks for the article. I’ve seen it before and tried everything it suggests.
No recent changes, but yet I did update the software last Tuesday. It managed to install and restarted successfully. A few days later it started with the same problems again.
Thanks for the response. Tried both of those, to no avail. Repair has suggested everything was ok, then froze on restart. Tried to reinstall the system, but freezes mid install.
Mac won’t boot unless in safe mode.
