One method is to use AssistiveTouch. Depending on which version of the OS running on your iPad, the menus in Settings may vary. Navigate to Settings > Accessibility > Touch > AssistiveTouch and turn on AssistiveTouch. Next, tap Customize Top Level Menu. Tap the minus sign (-) until one icon remains. Tap the remaining icon. Scroll down and tap Screenshot.

You may want to adjust the visibility (opacity) of the onscreen AssistiveTouch icon at idle. Return to the AssistiveTouch menu and tap Idle Capacity. Adjust the slider control to your preference. The available range is 15%-100%. Tap, hold and slide the AssistiveTouch icon around to position it to your preference anywhere on the screen edge.

To take a screenshot tap the AssistiveTouch icon. The icon won’t be in the screenshot.

If you take screenshots infrequently you may not want AssistiveTouch on all the time. Rather than turn it on and off in Settings, you can use Siri. Say, "Hey Siri, turn on AssistiveTouch" or "Hey Siri, turn off AssistiveTouch".

Another option to turn AssistiveTouch on and off is from Control Center. If the Accessibility Shortcuts icon (figure in a circle) isn’t in Control Center you can add it. Navigate to Settings > Control Center and tap Customize Controls. Tap the plus sign (+) beside Accessibility Shortcuts to include it. To customize which accessibility features appear as an option when you tap the Accessibility Shortcuts icon in Control Center, navigate to Settings > Accessibility > Accessibility Shortcut. Tap AssistiveTouch which adds a checkmark beside it to indicate its inclusion. You can uncheck any other accessibility feature if not needed.

To turn AssistiveTouch on or off from Control Center, swipe down from the top right edge of the screen to open it. Tap the Accessibility Shortcuts icon. Tap AssistiveTouch. Tap the screen to dismiss. Tap the screen again to dismiss Control Center.

Normally you can triple-click the Home button to turn AssistiveTouch on and off as well, but as your iPad’s is inoperative that not an available option.
