Mother & son shared an Apple ID, son has new Apple ID but wants to keep his iPhone photos and contacts.

My son has used my Apple ID on his Apple devices for years and now has his own Apple ID and wants to switch his iPhone to his new Apple ID but not loose his photos or contacts. We do not back up our photos or contacts to iCloud. Can he keep his photos & contacts that are on his iPhone when he switches to his new Apple ID? Please give each step if possible. Thank you!

iPhone XS, iOS 13

Do a backup of his phone. Make sure you remember the existing passcode on the phone and your Apple ID password.

Backups – Choose Method

Back up your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch.

Then complete the steps in the article below to make it 'his' phone.

Selling/Giving Away Device.

When setting up the phone again, restore from the backup.

Backup - Restore your device from an iCloud or iTunes backup.

Set up Family Sharing to keep access to your apps/purchases.

Or when changing to the new ID, there may be some data loss, but you can minimize it. Messages conversations will be lost if they are addressed to the ID. See the article below for other places that the old ID should be removed. Also set up Family Sharing to keep access to your apps/purchases.
