Sudden loss of use with iOS remote app

We’ve been using the remote app for our (admittedly pretty old) appleTV for a few years. It’s worked great for us until this week, when all of the sudden it stopped allowing us to scroll left/right/up/down. It only allows us to use the menu button and tap to select. Are we out of luck and need to upgrade our Apple TV? Or is this a glitch that needs to be repaired?

You might try pulling the plug on the Apple TV and then powering it up again after a short wait.
