How to sync my texting on my iPhone and iPad

How do I sync my iphone and iPad Pro texting together? Can I get the text on my iphone on my iPad? Do I need IMessage and how is that different from text messaging?

They must both be connected to iCloud and messages turn on both devices. Unless your iPad Pro is cellular capable it won't display messages from devices not connected using iMessage.
