my mac book says no software update pending, but I still have older version

My macbook has version 10.9.5. When I try to do software update, it says no update found. As I could not update my software, I could not update many of my apps.

Windows, Windows 10

You need to download the newer versions through the App Store

The update option in settings, only tells you about updates to the OS you are currently running.

You need to make sure your MacBook meets the requirements for newer versions.

There is support pages on the Apple website about how to upgrade to various OS - Catalina is the current one
