why is my account locked and they are asking for my social security number?

How do I know if it’s really Apple asking for my social security number? The notice said my account was locked because of my payment method was in error.

It's not. Apple will only ask customers for a social security number if they're verifying their identity as part of setting up Apple Pay Cash.

Apple will also only say that an Apple ID has been locked or disabled if it's in response to an attempt to log into it.
