You can only use songs, that are not protected by digital rights for a slideshow project. Are you using Apple Music? You cannot use songs downloaded from Apple Music, for example. Use songs you purchase individually from the iTunes Store or songs you ripped from unprotected CDs, songs you played yourself on your guitar and recorded with GarageBand or Logic.

The reason why you cannot use protected media files as a backing track in a slideshow or iMovie is, that the finished project can be exported and saved in a different format and that would convert the songs to a new format and the digital rights.
