Apple Earpods Not Working

I recently bought new earpods from Apple online and it doesn't seem to be working. Every time I plug it in there is no sound. Is it my phone or are the earpods possibly defective? I believe I have the Iphone XS.

Check the charging port for lint or other debris and see this:

If your headphones don‘t work with your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch
