Suddenly need to authenticate to access files, but how?

Suddenly many of my files can't be opened or even deleted as I get a message saying, "Can't open file. You need to authenticate before accessing this item". So how and where do I authenticate? Clicking "ok" doesn't take me anywhere at all.
