Stuck on “preparing iphone for software update”

I’m trying to update my iphone using itunes since it wouldn’t do anything when I click “download and install” directly from the iphone. But I’ve been waiting for it to update for close to two hours now and it’s stuck on “preparing iphone for software update” and my phone seems unaffected?

iPhone 6s, iOS 12
